From caves to houses! When the hunting era of humans has ended, our ancestors have gone out of their caves and settled in a house built by them. They can build houses wherever they wanted to. There were no laws established.
But it changed during the medieval times; land has been a source of wealth and power in history. People would fight over land possession. There were no laws implemented about land possession at that time. Kings then took over all the land and just assigned tenants to take care of them. Industrial Evolution released peasants from the bondage of the kings, and it was only then that peasants and ordinary people can have their own piece of land through buying.
